Unsymmetric boron (III) subphthalocyanines with a triselenole ring or a diselenete ring and eight fluoro groups were prepared by the reaction of 5,6-dicyano-4,7-diethylbenzo-[1,2,3]triselenole and tetrafluorophthalonitrile with trichloroborane in xylene. The reaction was accompanied by a contraction of the triselenole ring to the diselenete ring. The substrate, dicyanobenzo[1,2,3]triselenole, was prepared by a new procedure via a photolytic demethylenation reaction of 3,7-diethyl[1,3]diselenolophthalonitrile using a 10 W white LED light. While triselenolosubphthalocyanine was treated by triphenylphosphine to give the diselenete derivative, the reaction of diselenetosubphthalocyanine with Woolion’s reagent produced the expanded triselenole ring. The diselenete derivative reacted with tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)platinum to yield the corresponding platinum complex with Se-Pt bonds. Q-band absorption for the products appeared at around max = 590 nm in the UV-vis spectrum and weak emission was observed at about e = 620 nm. When diselenetosubphthalocyanine was treated with pentachloro antimonate in dichloromethane or sodium metal in hexane/tetrahydrofuran, the solution showed strong ESR signals. The structures of model compounds were optimized using the DFT method with the Gaussian 09 program at the B3LYP/6-31G (d, p) level.

The reaction of 5,6-dicyano-4,7-diethylbenzo[1,2,3]trithiole (1)
with trichloroborane in p-xylene and subsequent substitution of
the chloro group with phenol produced boron (III) subphthalocyanine
2 with three trithiole rings. Upon treatment of 1 with
trichloroborane in p-xylene in the presence of unsubstituted
phthalonitrile or tetrafluorophthalonitrile, unsymmetrical subphthalocyanines
3, 4, 6, and 7 with one or two trithiole rings
were obtained after the reaction with phenol. The Q-band
absorption of 2 appeared at λmax=611 nm in the UV-vis
spectrum and the emission was observed at λe=630 nm.
Decreasing the number of fused trithiole rings and ethyl groups
resulted in higher energy shifts of the Q-band absorption in the
UV-vis spectra and downfield chemical shifts of the 11B NMR
signals. Compounds 2, 3, and 4 were treated by pentachloro
antimonate in dichloromethane, the solution of which showed
strong ESR signals. The structures of simplified model compounds
were optimized using the DFT method with the
Gaussian 09 program at the B3LYP/6-31G (d, p) level.

4,8-Dialkylbenzo[1,2-d:4,5-d’]bis[1,2,3]triselenoles [alkyl = Et, Bu, and Oc (C8H17)] were first prepared and treated with concentrated sulfuric acid-d2 to generate benzobistriselenole dications, which were determined by NMR spectroscopy. The oxidation of dioctylbenzobistriselenole with three equivalents of single-electron oxidizing reagent (NOSbF6) produced the corresponding dication•2SbF6–, and the salt was isolated into a stable form. The ESR spectra of the dications measured in concentrated sulfuric acid in the range of room temperature and –196 °C were observed as split peaks similar to that of solid state dication•2SbF6–. Magnetic susceptibility of the dication•2SbF6– was determined by a SQUID magnetometer, which showed the salt is diamagnetic. The optimized structures and the total energy of the singlet- and triplet-state benzobistriselenole dications were calculated using the DFT method at the B3LYP6-311G**(d,p) level. The results revealed that the structures of the singlet- and triplet-state dications calculated have a completely planar forms and the triplet-state dication is slightly more stable than the singlet-state one (in acetonitrile, PCM).
