A mixture of graphite powder and ruthenium chloride (III) anhydrous was treated at 723 K under 0.3 MPa chlorine for 3 days, followed by reduction under 40 kPa of hydrogen for 1 h to produce ruthenium metal particles intercalated between graphite layers (Ru-GIC). The structures of ruthenium particles depended on the reduction temperatures. Sheet-like ruthenium particles with 1–3 nm thickness and 10 to several hundred nm width containing numerous irregularly shaped holes with round edge, were formed by reduction at 573 K. A Ru-GIC sample treated at 653 K possessed two-dimensional ruthenium nanosheets with hexagonal holes (straight lines intersect at an angle of 120◦) in a similar range of thickness and width. On the other hand, Ru-GIC samples
reduced at 773 and 823 K showed two-dimensional plate morphology with a thickness of 1–4 nm. In addition, ruthenium nanoparticles supported on the graphite surface (Ru/Gmix) were also prepared from a slurry of ruthenium chloride (III) hydrate and graphite powder by impregnation and hydrogen reduction. The ruthenium particles in Ru/Gmix were spherical at about 3.6 nm, and the reduction temperature did not affect their particles size. Both Ru-GIC and Ru/Gmix samples were evaluated for cinnamaldehyde (CAL) hydrogenation in supercritical carbon dioxide solvent at 323 K, and they were active to produce cinnamyl alcohol (COL) and hydrocinnamaldehyde (HAL). However, Ru-GIC samples showed higher COL selectivity than Ru/Gmix prepared at the same reduction temperature, and COL selectivity over Ru-GIC increased with the reduction treatments at 773 and 823 K. -

Catalytic hydrogenation to obtain valuable chemicals is an important transformation process in the chemical industry. Raw chemicals in the process rely on fossil resources, such as oil and natural gas. As alternative energy resources, the utilization of woody biomass is indispensable for the development of sustainable valuable chemicals production. We show the development of supported noble metal catalysts for hydrogenation of aromatic compounds, model compounds of lignin, in aqueous ethanol solution, which can be obtained from bioethanol, without using external hydrogen gas.

Hydrogenation of 4-propylphenol (4PP) was studied over graphite-supported platinum-palladium (Pt-Pd/G) bimetallic catalysts in aqueous ethanol solution without the use of external source. Compared to the corresponding monometallic (Pt/G and Pd/G) catalysts, the prepared Pt-Pd/G bimetallic catalysts were more active for hydrogen production and aromatic hydrogenation to 4-propyl cyclohexanone (NONE), cis- and trans-4-propyl cyclohexanols (NOLs). Pt/G was active for hydrogen production but inactive for 4PP hydrogenation, and Pd/G catalyst was active for both hydrogen production and 4PP hydrogenation. Pt-Pd/G catalysts with different platinum to palladium ratios (Pt:Pd = 1:0, 1:1, 1:2, 1:4, 1:8 and 0:1) were prepared to obtain the best composition
for the ring hydrogenation. Among the bimetallic catalysts prepared, the yields of NONE and NOLs were the highest over 0.5Pt-0.5 Pd/G (0.5 wt% platinum and 0.5 wt% palladium loadings, and Pt:Pd=1:2). TEM analysis showed small (3.1–3.3 nm) metal particles dispersed on the graphite surface in the bimetallic catalysts. EXAFS analysis showed the formation of platinum core-palladium enriched shell structure of bimetallic particles. It was suggested that the high activity of Pt-Pd/G catalysts for 4PP hydrogenation in aqueous ethanol solution was caused by the formation of small platinum-palladium alloy particles on graphite surface and that palladium on the surface of particles was the active site. This work demonstrated Pt-Pd/G as highly active catalysts for aromatic hydrogenation of 4PP without the use of any external hydrogen source. -

Iridium nanoparticles were synthesized between graphite layers by thermal treatment of the mixture of iridium chloride (IV) and graphite powder under chlorine atmosphere followed by hydrogen reduction (Ir-GIC). In Ir-GIC samples with 1-6 wt% iridium metal loadings, all iridium nanoparticles with disk-shape (iridium nanodisks) were located between graphite layers; however, iridium nanoparticles on graphite surface were also formed in addition to iridium nanodisks in the Ir-GIC samples with 8 and 10 wt% iridium metal loadings. Iridium nanodisks between graphite layers were highly active for cinnamaldehyde hydrogenation and selective to cinnamyl alcohol compared with the iridium particles on graphite surfaces.
